A POEM BY KATIE O'BRIEN

tedium

musty incense and
two hundred toes pinched
in Sunday bests

golden threads
preaching colonialism from
whitewashed pulpits

a baby gurgles
hearing aids squeal
canned oxygen seeps

to avoid perdition
learn thirteen descants
and harmonize the following:

take our minds
and brainwash them
amen
